Join the world fluro wave for mental health

Non-Profit Surf community OneWave is set to celebrate its 6th Birthday on Friday 22nd March 2019, by creating a fluro wave at 85 beaches around the world, to raise awareness of mental health.

Local OneWave communities will stand at the water’s edge dressed in their brightest fluro, linking arms, with a simple message - to let anyone facing mental health challenges, know they are not alone.

OneWave Founder Grant Trebilco says, “It’s time to make an invisible issue, visible and let people know it’s totally ok, not to be ok.”

OneWave’s believes that everyone should have the chance to ride waves and openly talk about mental health without being judged. OneWave is doing this by sharing a simple recipe of saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro.

In just six years, OneWave has achieved a global impact, raising awareness and reducing social stigmas around mental health issues through their Fluro Friday Sessions. Trebilco says “Bright colors make people happy and help start conversations about an invisible issue. Combine that with surfing and it is a great recipe to help free the funk.”

Fluro Friday’s started at Bondi Beach, Australia in March 2013. It has since gone viral with Fluro Friday sessions held at more than 170 beaches globally, as far and wide as California, Hawaii, Mexico, the UK, New Zealand, Bali, India, Samoa and Fiji. Fluro Fridays consist of creating a space for an “anti bad vibes circle” allowing people to share stories in a safer environment, as well as a fluro paddle out surf session and free fluro yoga.

Trebilco himself has suffered from mental health issues, “When I was diagnosed with bipolar seven years ago, it was surfing and good people that helped me the most. Sometimes, one wave really is all it takes. I want anyone experiencing mental health issues to have the opportunity to experience how good feels to get in the ocean and catch a wave and openly talk about mental health.”

According to Beyond Blue, suicide is the biggest killer of young people and accounts for the deaths of more people than car accidents.
