Open volleyball round robin

The boys and girls open volleyball teams travelled to Olympic Park to compete in a round robin volleyball tournament on Friday November 16. It was an excellent opportunity to play some highly competitive volleyball against some of the best schools.  The teams have been training exceptionally well each Wednesday afternoon and often adding an extra training session in as well.

The boy’s team has been run by Eugene of year 12, who has brought a far more complex system of play to the team. He has incorporated more structure and positioning, as well as planned moves. The girl’s team has also improved remarkably, with far more consistency and skill execution.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank Ms Sihavong from Science. She is a new teacher at Rose Bay and has come along to some of our training sessions and advised on training and technique which has really made an impact.

The boys competition had four teams: Sydney Boys, who are the top team in NSW, Tempe High, who are a very close second along with Caringbah High who are on par with us; Rose Bay.

The boys played outstanding volleyball throughout. They competed on every play and worked cohesively as a team.  The first game was against Sydney and whilst they did not win, the boys won some fantastic points and matched Sydney in many areas. The second match was against Tempe and by then the boys had gotten into the rhythm of play and really stretched them. The final match was against Caringbah where Rose Bay won a close contest, meaning we came third on the day.

Eugene led the way with his consistency. He is very reliable and his accurate setting, serving and defence meant we stayed in many points.

Will, who has just recently joined the team, did a great job, particularly with his enthusiasm and willingness to scrap hard. Woo-Jin, one of the more experienced players showed some great touches and decision making in attack and was very safe in defence. Arthur who is one of our most aggressive hitters, did a great job intimidating the opposition at the net while Adam, another newer member of the team was adaptive and demonstrated excellent reading of the play which made him unpredictable for the other side. Eivan had a great tournament; his athleticism in attack was great and he was able to kill many points. Vicente worked well across the court, making valuable contributions and Nick played a great match too, he was a great team player working cohesively in all positions. A big thank you to Dimitri who unfortunately was injured and could not play, however he showed great team spirit by coming along and supporting the team on the day.

A very special mention to Mr Tesoriero, who is on his Practicum at Rose Bay from Sydney University. He facilitated the Boys team and showed amazing maturity and composure rendering First Aid to a player from Caringbah, who dislocated his shoulder. Mr Tesoriero went through all the appropriate procedures and managed the situation impeccably.

The girls did equally well. They had a narrow loss over Tempe and a strong victory over Caringbah.

The girls have really developed their skills and showed great teamwork. They have developed their systems and their consistency of play and their skill execution was much improved. A feature of their play was their ability to compete on every play and implement skills they had trained for into the games. The team was led admirably by Kaelynn, who showed great competitiveness and is a dynamic leader.

Dora was outstanding in all facets of the game. Her passing set up many points and her composure kept us in points too. Keith has become one of our best finishers; her outside hitting was powerful and very hard to defend. Vonne has developed a great all round game and she made many great defensive plays as well as great set passes, often to Keith to finish. Emma has been one of the teams most improved players. As a result of her hard efforts she was able to match all the players. Another player who has improved is Lehon who did very well, particularly in defensive plays and keeping us in points.

For me as the coach of these teams, I feel very proud and I have been very impressed by all the players’ attitudes, commitment to training and the manner in which they represented our college. They competed very hard, however showed humility and goodwill.  I look forward to our next competition, which will be early in 2019.
