Interview with Elio – official Sydney Roosters ball boy

Elio has been a ball boy with the Sydney Roosters since 2017. He recently had the honour of serving as ball boy and watching his team take out the premiership in the Grand Final between the Roosters and Melbourne Storm.

Elio talks to Mrs Godby about his role and passion for NRL.

1. Hi Elio, we were all very impressed seeing you on television and in the sheds during the recent NRL Grand Final. Can you describe what your role is with the Roosters?

I am a ball boy for the Roosters. On most games I need to be at the stadium at least an hour before kick-off. We set up for warm up – put out tackling bags, water bottles etc. then in the game we run out the tee when a try is scored and give the players the ball when it goes out. After the game we bring out the Gatorade and water for the players

2. Do you/did you play NRL? Who for and what position?

I have played for Bondi United for six years, this year for the Under 16s - for the last four years, I’ve had to play up a year as there isn’t a team in my age group. I’m also a referee with the Balmain Referees Association.

3. How long have you been in this role and how did you get into it?

I started in round 20 last year. For the last few years I was the ball boy for the Bondi United open age team. Someone recommended me when the Roosters needed a ball boy for an under 20s game because they were short. They let me do the main game too, and invited me back the next week. I ended up doing all the rest of their home games for the year, and I have been lucky enough to do all the home games and a few away games this season as well as a couple of the women’s games. And of course the Grand Final.

4. What is the best part about being Ball Boy?

It is a great experience, getting to be so close to the team and watch the game from the best seat tin the house. The best part would definitely be going in the sheds to watch the team sing the victory song after a win.

5. Describe your experience on GF day?

On grand final day, I got to the ground early because I had to ball boy for the women’s game too. Sadly they lost, but it was a fun way to start the day. As they day went on and the stadium filled up, I did get a bit nervous. It was a great experience running out with the team in front of 80,000 fans. The sound was deafening. As we had 6 ball boys I did the first half with two others and the other three did the second half, while I watched from the side line.

Celebrating on the field after they won was one of the best experiences that I’ve ever had, especially jumping in the team photo when they got the trophy, and walking with the team while they did their lap of honour.
