BayFest 2018

Rose Bay Secondary College hosted its third annual BayFest on the weekend with over thirty bands and music ensembles entertaining hundreds of festival goers in the plaza on Sunday. The Music Ensemble Program was excited to welcome legendary drummer and musician rights’ activist Lindy Morrison to the school. Lindy has worked with many of our students at Waverley Council’s Bondi Wave program and presented the inaugural Lindy Morrison Young Women in Music Encouragement Award to year 11 student Mia for her ‘musical skill, commitment and team work’. Congratulations Mia.

Playing their last ever gig at school was popular Year 12 band, Hot Heads, who performed to a very enthusiastic crowd. Other highlights of the day included crowd-pleasing performances from the Percussion Ensemble and our newest ensemble Rose Vox, as well as stellar performances from Senior and Junior Concert Bands who didn’t miss a beat even during gale-force winds. The plaza was filled with a fun, festival atmosphere as people enjoyed the music, the sun, as well as the stalls, the food, the information stalls and drinking coffee and/or chai out of RBSC keep cups thanks to the environment committee.

BayFest is a fundraiser for the school and this year it was also supported by the Woollahra Council Community and Cultural Grants Program.

We were delighted to welcome headspace, WAYS and Wayside Op Shop into the school as well as Woollahra Mayor Peter Cavanagh, Cr Paul Mitchell, Cr Lucinda Regan. Also attending BayFest were Waverley Council Cr Paula Masselos, Marjorie O’Neill, ALP candidate for Coogee, and the newly-announced ALP candidate for Wentworth, Tim Murray.

While it’s great to welcome our local politicians’ into the school, we were especially delighted to see so many teachers at the event. A big thank you to Mr Godby, Ms Godby, Ms Vine, Mr Flack, Ms Cave, Ms Waser, Ms Westbrook, Mr Carter, Mr Waugh, Ms Moon, Mr Jimenez and all the other school staff who supported the day. We’d also like to thank Murray Jackson, David Power and Sean Windsor for their constant hard work and support.

Thanks to the MEP committee who put so much work into making the day a success. BayFest creates a number of opportunities -- our talented students perform, we showcase our bands and ensembles, and we connect our school to the local community – but it’s also a great day out.
