On Monday October 28, four RBSC students from Years 10 and 11 (Hattie, Mary, Sarah, and Jana) participated in the Kirby Cup mooting competition at Western Sydney University.
They competed as part of 32 schools that day and made the final 8, winning their first 2 rounds before losing to one of the teams that made the top 2 on the day. A great achievement, especially considering their preparations were almost entirely on their own and this was the first time we have entered this competition. They acted as barristers in a fictional criminal appeal case involving a Sikh man fined $500 for carrying a “kirpan” (a sword carried ceremonially by Sikh men to defend the weak) while in public. It led to some interesting arguments over the definition of a knife and on what constitutes reasonable religious exemption.
