This was a very high level invitation only event. Schools participating were schools with volleyball programs, with the focus on competition, skill and game development as well as fellowship. 30 students from Rose Bay were involved.
There has been a transition occurring in our volleyball this semester with the open boys, as the previous team consisted of graduating Year 12 boys. Therefore the open boys team and the 16 boys team’s played their first formal competition matches on the day. Our open girls team has a mix of existing players with a number of exciting new players.
As a result of lots training and time spent together, the open girls team performed at an outstanding level. They played two teams from Tempe and Ryde Secondary College. They had a strong win and two very close games.
Dora, (captain) led the team. The girls played some exciting volleyball. They have been working hard on strategy and used the tournament to apply their training. The skill level, timing, communication and overall enthusiasm was fantastic. They played a really exciting style and the team spirit was amazing.
Keith, Vonne and Mary, our outside hitters came up with some amazing finishes. Dora, with Christine and Joana who both only started this year were our designated setters. Christine and Joana have developed very quickly and were amazing, playing against open girls. Other younger members who impressed, included Scarlett (who also learned how to umpire and was umpiring at a high level by the end of the day), Juileana, who has all-round amazing speed and skills as well as Anastasija, who really improved. Emma and Lehon, who have been part of the team for two years were reliable and solid all day.
The 16 boys impressed well beyond their level. This was their first ever full competition match and they were playing established schools in Tempe, Sydney Boys and Ryde Secondary College.
The most exciting part of the day, was when they played out a 24 all draw against Sydney Boys. As the games were timed the buzzer went. This is a significant sign that these boys have amazing potential to be seriously competitive moving forward.
The open boys had the hardest job of all. All the open boys also qualify for the 16’s so they played up a level. Our teams were by far the youngest at the tournament.
They played against Sydney Boys, Tempe, Ryde, Sydney Tech and Hurlstone Agricultural. Sydney Boys for example play in the GPS competition and the other schools, particularly Ryde College are very established volleyball schools in NSW.
The boys played with so much determination and passion which was amazing to see. They won many tough points and pushed their opposition every point.
It was an amazing day. Ours students represented themselves and our college with distinction.
The aim of the day was to practice what we have been training, learn, develop and have fun.
We achieved that, especially the fun bit.
