Atlassian adventure

On Friday, March 22, four students and two teachers were invited to attend a ShipEd workshop at the Atlassian headquarters in the city. Atlassian is an innovative software company, founded by Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquar.

Their ShipEd philosophy is that students of the future need to understand how technology is changing the world and problem solving; critical thinking; creativity and adapting to change, are all skills they will need to acquire.

RBSC students: Jess, Will, Kshama, Fred and teachers: Emma Radford and Kathryn Dobb, worked alongside two Atlassians, Matt and Ludo, who helped us to identify and address the significant problems that exist in schools today.

By brainstorming and using the Atlassian spirit of ‘Open work’ and guided by these two exceptional industry experts in their skilled fields, our team came up with some very workable solutions that may be developed and implemented into our school in the near future.

There were 20 schools involved in this full day hands on workshop, with each team at the end of the day, individually presenting their problem and solution to the rest of the schools and Atlassian staff. Kshama did extremely well, representing our team on addressing mental health issues in schools, explaining how our team came up with the potential idea of using technology to access assistance from professionals for all students.

We would very much like to acknowledge and thank Andi Breslin (an RBSC parent and director at Atlassian) for inviting us to attend and participate in this incredible opportunity, as well as Matt and Ludo for working with our students and teachers in helping us to rethink how to solve problems, through this innovative design thinking method.
