On the May 3, a number of students across all grades, attended the 2019 Secondary Schools Day, Sydney Writers’ Festival.
Students were exposed to a range of authors who provided insights into the industry, as well as ideas that help make a story effective and engaging for a range of audiences.
The authors came from different backgrounds and housed a variety of different experiences and unique personal stories that influenced their voice within the story, appealing to all students in different ways. Some were comedic, some were analytical, but they were all entertaining. Natasha described the day as “a great chance to enjoy the power of literature in a light, open and engaging environment.”
Students enjoyed a lunch in the historic Carriageworks, where they had the chance to discuss the author’s perspectives and what effect it had on themselves.
Some things they took away from the authors: “Write about the things that bother you.”
“Writers are readers.”
"Co-authoring is in"
“Rejection forces you to get better.”
“Read out of your comfort zone to become a more well-rounded reader and writer.”
“You have a tremendous amount of power.”
