Native bee garden at RBSC

Native Bee Garden

We are please to announce that the Environment Team here at Rose Bay Secondary College are in the finishing touches of our Native Bee Garden.

While the Native Bees are a highlight of the garden, it also features over 30 species of indigenous plants, a frog pond, and a variety of composting initiatives. A bush tucker garden (working progress) features a variety of native plants that in future years will be able to provide the food technology students with an abundance of sustainable, Aboriginal food. The garden has already been used by Year 8 Science students learning about ecology, and the area is also an ideal learning space for Geography, Design and Technology and Food Technology. Furthermore, with assistance from student helpers, compost bins and worm farms collect compost from all the schools staff rooms, limiting the amount of organic matter that reaches landfill.

This project was made possible by an environment grant from Waverley Council, who have also helped us with information and resources. The Environment Team within Rose Bay has significantly grown throughout the development of the Native bee garden since November of last year. This was definitely a positive impact of the introduction of the bee garden, it was able to establish a community and raise awareness about sustainability, highlighting environmental responsibilities. It was a tireless effort from both teachers especially Ms Chapman and Mr Waugh; and students from across both junior and senior years.

We are extremely excited and proud of the hard work and dedication of the Environment Team and the teachers. The gardening has, and will continue to be ongoing and we hope that this space can be utilised throughout the years and grow into a full functioning mature native bee garden.
