However, our openers hit a brick wall in the form of Jannali’s opening batsman who, using a combination of guile and brute force, scythed us around the park on the way to a well-compiled 107. At one point the opposition’s run rate ballooned to almost ten runs an over and a score of 350 looked a distinct possibility.
Some excellent bowling in the last ten overs of Jannali’s innings saw wickets regularly fall and the score being restricted to 9/278 off the allocated 40 overs. The highlight of our bowling performance came in the shape of diminutive Year 8 leg spinner, Jamie “SK”, who took 5/55 from his 8 overs. Chasing such a large total can be daunting, however our top order dug in and ensured we made a reasonable fist of the chase.
Our captain led from the front with a well-compiled 59 and was ably supported by opener Tamzid (20), Jamie (23), and Evan (16) as we compiled 155 before being bowled out on the penultimate ball of the day. Pleasingly, with our entire squad coming from Years 7 to 10, all players are eligible for next year’s competition.
A special mention should be made of our two Year 7 team members, Joseph and Ethan, who acquitted themselves admirably in their first taste of senior cricket. All members of the team are to be congratulated for their excellent behaviour and sportsmanship on the day and for being such fine representatives of the College.
