Year 12 Timber Major Works

Year 12 Timber Major Works

Students have been busy working on their HSC major practical projects under the guidance of Mr Braid and Mr Waugh.

There is an interesting range of projects currently at various stages of their development. Year 12 student Will's hollow surfboard features technology reminiscent of an airplane wing. The surfboard's internal structure features approximately 16 ribs spaced along a central spar which creates the cross-sectional profile of the surfboard. The surfboard's top skin is made of 5 pieces of Paulownia timber glued edge to edge, each separated by a strip of Merbau timber. Will has devoted many hours outside of class and has become a resident of the woodwork workshops.

Eden's solid timber chair is deceptively difficult having subtle out-of-square angles in the seat box's frame. The backrest is angled and has a concave profile making this chair's degree of difficulty to the next level. The chair will have a soft upholstered seat and will feature intricate detail, added to the backrest's centre square. Nicola has custom made a laminated plywood sheet, forming and gluing the layers over a mold to create the feature curve of her Low-rise Cabinet.
In future weeks we'll show you other student projects which include musical instruments and a Memphis Design bookcase made from cardboard boxes.
